Tết , or Vietnamese New Year, is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture. The word is a shortened form of Tết Nguyên Đán, which is Sino-Vietnamese for “Feast of the First Morning of the First Day”. Tết celebrates the arrival of spring based on the Vietnamese calendar, which usually has the date falling in January or February.
Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. They start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring, and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).
Bầu cua tôm cá is a Vietnamese gambling game that involves using three dice. It is traditionally played during Tết.
Playing cards can also be played by players from the same family during this special occasion. Otherwise you will be arrested by the police because play cards and Bầu cua tôm cá is illegal when players are strangers.
Giving away red envelopes (lì xì): money will be put inside these red envelopes and given away to younger people (usually kids) in order to earn some luck for both giver and receiver
Watch firework (coi pháo bông): Vietnam Government doesn’t allow residents to conduct this activity because it’s dangerous, so the experts will carry it out. However, since 2017 new year eve, they have stopped this activity due to its cost and save up money for poor residents.
MEANING OF THESE ACTIVITIES:
Lĩ xì: giving away a red envelope with money inside is a way to
wish the receiver a lucky year with many achievement and also, the giver will gain some words from the receiver about a better health, better career, luck, happiness,..in a new year.
Bầu cua tôm cá: It could be considered as a way to check your luck in the new year. If you win alot, which mean you have a good year, if you don’t then the game is just for fun. In reality, the game was played because it’s fun, no one really care about the money they earned from the game.
Pháo bông: the scenery looks spectacular and relaxing, it’s like blow up every bad things in the past.
